Staff and pupils at Bassingbourn Village College celebrate continued Ofsted success

A recent Ofsted visit has found that Bassingbourn Village College, part of Anglian Learning, has maintained its ‘Good’ rating, with the college receiving praise for its ‘happy and safe environment’ that ‘pupils are proud to be part of.’ Staff and pupils at Bassingbourn Village College are celebrating a consecutive ‘Good’ report after their latest Ofsted inspection in April 2023. According to the report, pupils at the school are: “well mannered, polite and respectful” and “encouraged to deepen their understanding of the wider world and make positive contributions to the community.” Vickey Poulter, Principal at Bassingbourn Village College, said: “We are delighted that this report recognises our school’s high aspirations and love of learning and demonstrates our unwavering commitment to our core values of respect, resilience and responsibility. A huge congratulations are owed to our dedicated colleagues, students and families whose efforts have allowed us to secure the recognition we deserve.” The secondary school’s curriculum was described as “ambitious for all” and the report highlights how “specialist subject leaders have identified, in detail, what pupils need to know. They have carefully sequenced the order of learning. This means that, over time, pupils add additional layers of knowledge to what they already know.” Ms Poulter continued: “I am thrilled to see that the report has recognised our pupils’ respect and care for one another, as “they celebrate each other’s successes and work together to overcome difficulties.” Our ambitious curriculum and high-quality teaching inspire our students to believe in themselves and realise their potential.” The report applauded leaders…

Interactive Theatre

We were so lucky to be joined after Easter by TIC Box Production to deliver its powerful production “Boy” to our Year 7s & Year 9s. This interactive theatre was part of a whole day experience as part of our new anti bullying iniative within Bassingbourn Village College.  As well as students watching “Boy” and exploring and discussing its themes, students split into groups and took part in workshops to develop ideas for our new anti-bullying charter. All the ideas developed over the course of these two days will be shared with the whole school to agree together our new charter.

Bassingbourn’s Virtual Trek 2022

As part of our drive to encourage our students to be physically active and to fundraise for the local community we are once again holding a sponsored virtual walk/run/cycle for staff and pupils. The event will run between Monday 28th March and Sunday 10th April to allow students to participate over the first week of the Easter holidays. We have a current goal to cover a collective distance of around 9000 miles, which equates to approximately a mile a day for each member of the school community over the fortnight. This year we have chosen to travel around the USA, starting at Harvard University and ending at MIT, both in Cambridge, Massachusetts, going via places such as Orlando, Los Angeles and Seattle and will visit a range of different states and landmarks. We will be updating our website and social media each day to show the progress being made along our virtual trek and how the different colleges are doing. For 2022 we are raising funds for East Anglian Air Ambulance, a local charity that delivers highly skilled doctors and critical care paramedics by air to seriously ill or injured people. Anglian Learning crowned winners at National Awards

East Anglian multi-academy trust, Anglian Learning, has been crowned the joint winner of the “Outstanding governance in a multi-academy trust” award at the National Governance Association’s (NGA) Outstanding Governance Awards 2021. The biennial awards recognise the contributions of governors, trustees and governance professionals to the education of children and young people.  The winners of the awards were unveiled at a celebratory event on Thursday 9th September at the House of Commons, attended by representatives from nominated schools and trusts. Virtual Trek Success

Over the last two weeks Bassingbourn Village College students and staff have taken part in a virtual trek to Colombo, Sri Lanka, some 7000 miles away!  The virtual trek was organised as a positive activity for the whole community to support; reuniting us all in isolation importantly promoting the significance of physical exercise on mental wellbeing. Sri Lanka was chosen as the final destination as it gave a realistic goal of a mile a day for all staff and students, while the route would explore a number of cultural countries. Before the trek began, students were given a choice of four local charities to fundraise on behalf of, with the student body voting overwhelmingly to raise funds for Tom’s Trust; a local Cambridgeshire charity dedicated to providing psychological support for children with brain tumours and their families.  The goal we set ourselves was to raise £3000, a tough target but one we were driven to achieve. Not only did we reach our destination, we also smashed our target managing a total of 8559 miles, taking us through 16 countries England, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and finally Sri Lanka.  We were overwhelmed with support from our community and have so far raised a staggering £3506 for Tom’s Trust.

The Anglian Learning Writing Prize 2021

We are delighted to announce the launch of ‘The Anglian Learning Writing Prize 2021’, an exciting creative opportunity for all of our students.  To enter, students are invited to submit work across a wide range of categories.  All entries will be judged by award-winning, published writers, who are also graduates of the Creative Writing MA programme at the University of East Anglia.  Winners of the individual writing categories will be offered a mentoring session with literary editor Freya Dean.  The winning entries and all shortlisted entries will be published in The Anglian Learning Writing Prize Anthology 2021.  This anthology will appear in both print and digital formats and all winning and shortlisted students will receive their own personal copies of this publication and a certificate.

Daily Challenges

While the country has been in lockdown, staff and students from Bassingbourn Village College have been taking part in daily challenges created by Mr Beck. Set every day, these challenges have ranged from creative activities, such as compiling a scrapbook or making a desk tidy; to life skills such as fixing something broken in the house or learning how to use the washing machine. Some have focused on supporting others in this difficult time, like reading a book to a relative on-line, or showing someone a simple act of kindness. Others have been designed to encourage physical fitness such as designing your own fitness circuits to doing 100 sit ups! These daily challenges have been incredibly popular and have given staff and students a fun activity each day – something incredibly important while we have been safely staying at home.
